perler I was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana right before high school.  I attended North Central High School and then pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.  I knew from an early age that I wanted to pursue a career in medicine.  It wasn't until I was in college that I decided to specialize in foot and ankle disorders. I have always been athletically inclined and was always fascinated with how much stress the body could endure through the various activities I got involved in.

The decision to pursue a career in foot and ankle care was made when I spent some time shadowing a friend and mentor who happened to be a cardiologist at a local homeless care shelter.  That was perhaps when I first realized how important a properly functioning foot was to survival.  I knew from then on, I would focus my attention to keeping people on their feet doing the activities they enjoy most.

My foot and ankle training started at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.  I then did a three year surgical residency at Palmetto General Hospital, where my main focus was trauma and reconstruction of the lower extremity.

I was then blessed to do two different international fellowship programs.  I first trained in Kurgan, Russia for advanced lower extremity deformity correction with the use of external fixation in 2003.  In 2004 I did an AO international orthopedic trauma fellowship program in Hannover, Germany.  I have also had the pleasure to train under Dr. A Lee Dellon, a world renowned plastic surgeon from Baltimore, Maryland who pioneered peripheral nerve decompression surgery.  In addition, I have attended several international orthopedic training sessions in Germany and Italy.  I am currently board certified in both Foot Surgery & Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.  I am a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and a member of both the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association.

My interest in foot and ankle is quite varied.  I really enjoy taking on challenging reconstructive surgical cases in both adults and children.   I also have keen interest in the biomechanics of the lower extremity and have been in the process of designing sports specific orthotic devices for high demand physical activities ranging from professional motor sports to running and cycling.  Perhaps my biggest area of interest is in the further development of motion preserving procedures such as biological augmentation and joint replacements of both the ankle and foot. In fact I am currently in the process of designing a new ankle joint replacement system.

Outside of work I enjoy nothing more than spending time with my beautiful wife and daughter.  They are the highlight of my life.  I also like to paint, although there never seems to be enough time.  Lately I have picked up a camera and have been learning the "art" of photography.  While a few injuries have limited what I can do athletically, I recently joined a developmental cycling team and have greatly enjoyed what the local cycling community has to offer.
